Player Development

For Pickleball BC Association (“PBCA”), an enhanced player development program will be a focus across British Columbia.

Competitions, Tournaments, and Player Development

Competitive pickleball remained a key focus area in 2025, with events designed to support a wide range of skill levels while promoting fair play and sportsmanship. These initiatives work towards developing players.

In 2025, 65 major tournaments were hosted across British Columbia, 12 of which were sanctioned, as highlighted on the PBCA 2025 Tournament webpage. These events reflected the strength of collaboration between PBCA, affiliate clubs, tournament directors, officials, and facility partners.

A major highlight of the competitive calendar was the 2025 PBCA Provincial Championships held in Vernon. This flagship event showcased the highest standards of competition and officiating within the province. Notably, all matches were fully refereed, and every referee was from British Columbia, demonstrating the depth, professionalism, and capability of BC’s officiating community.

Key accomplishments

  • Delivery of 65 BC and 12 sanctioned and affiliate/associated club tournaments across multiple regions of the province.
  • Successful hosting of the 2025 Provincial Championships in Vernon.
  • 100% refereed matches at the Provincial Championships, staffed entirely by BC accredited officials.
  • Opportunities for participation across divisions, age groups, and skill levels.
  • Consistent application of tournament standards, rules, and policies.
  • Strong volunteer and official support contributing to positive player experiences.

These tournaments not only provided competitive opportunities but also strengthened community connections, supported local clubs, and showcased pickleball as a welcoming and well-organized sport throughout British Columbia.

In parallel, PBCA continued to support player development pathways that encourage participation, skill improvement, and enjoyment at every level of play.

Player, Coach, and Officials Pathway Development Targets and Actions (2026 Focus)

  • Standardize a provincial coaching pathway aligned with the Pickleball Canada Organization (“PCO”) National Program and the Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) model.
  • Host an annual Provincial Championship serving as a primary qualifying event for National Championships and the 2026 Provincial Team.
  • Establish a standardized officials training program with regional and provincial clinics.
  • Utilize local, regional, and provincial tournaments as training and mentoring environments for officials.

Previously, PBCA had made progress in improved alignment discussions with national partners, and increased emphasis on training integration within sanctioned tournaments. Hence, we would like to continue the momentum.
